Role: Motion Designer
Studio: Sarofsky
Client: Amazon Prime Video
I worked with Sarofsky to create the opening sequence for ‘Butterfly’ for Amazon MGM Studios. Based on a graphic novel with the same name, this character-driven thriller explores complex family dynamics within the treacherous world of global espionage.
To introduce our hero character, David, in the very first episode, we begin with a deeply personal touch: a voicemail message he leaves for his daughter. This intimate moment sets the emotional tone and immediately connects the audience to David’s character on a human level. Our creative challenge was to visually represent this voicemail in a way that felt both meaningful and seamlessly integrated into the broader narrative world.
We designed a unique soundwave visualization of David’s recording that serves as the centerpiece of this sequence. Rather than a simple flat graphic, the soundwave is crafted with multiple layers of depth and texture, giving it a sense of dimensionality and life.
As the sequence progresses, this soundwave smoothly transforms into the sprawling cityscape of Seoul, symbolizing the connection between David’s personal world and the larger, vibrant environment in which the story unfolds.
Beyond its role in this opening scene, the soundwave design also plays a foundational role in establishing the show’s overall visual language. Its style, color palette, and layered composition influenced the graphic elements that appear throughout the series, creating a cohesive and immersive aesthetic that ties the story’s emotional and geographic elements together. This thoughtful integration helps to engage viewers visually while reinforcing key themes and character connections.
